DC’s Update March 2017
My last update was in November and a lot has happened since then. As you know I am leaving as DC in May at the AGM and Graham Phillips, our county commissioner, has appointed Fiona Speakes as DC designate. Fiona is currently GSL at 1st Willaston. I am staying on as Deputy DC for the time being. Phil Ashton is standing down as DESC at the end of March and our ADC Beavers and Scouts are also leaving at the AGM. Fiona and I have appointed a new DESC to take over from 1st April and new ADCs will also be appointed. Bonita is continuing as ADC cubs. It’s all change! Also at the AGM Ken Salter will be standing down as Chaplain and my thanks to him for holding this position and for his support. He will be staying on as District President.
In November Chris Marchant organised a Science jamboree at Liverpool University. Cubs, Beavers and Brownies attended and got several badges-stargazing, experiment and digital. Beaver colonies have held sleepovers and in January 102 beavers and leaders attended the Ellesmere Port pantomime. The beavers also held their District Challenge at Willaston on 11th February.
In December as the 100 years celebration of cub scouting came to an end most of the district cubs went on the lantern walk at the zoo and re-made their promise. Jon Turley arranged for us to be in the pavilion for this which was great as it rained!
The district carol service was well attended and 10 cubs and beavers from 1st Capenhurst were invested. The new group at Capenhurst is growing!
Our annual Honours evening was held on Feb 3rd in the Civic hall in Ellesmere Port. The mayor of EP, our MP and Graham Phillips were amongst the guests. The presentation was of the District day which was held in April. We presented 29 bronze awards, 39 silver, 14 gold, 9 platinum, 2 Diamond awards and 6 young leader belts. There were also 4 bronze and 2 silver D of E awards presented. Harold Stockdale received the Commissioner’s Commendation for his work with the Christmas post and 8 leaders were awarded the Chief Scout’s Commendation for good service. Bonita Wilson and Pete Walters received awards for merit and Richard Johnson gained his bar to the medal of merit. The new Ken Young Rotary trophy for Community service was presented by Keith Anderton to 1st Great Sutton Young leaders. The Wendy Hyndman trophy for scouting through adversity was presented to a cub from 1st Great Sutton Woden, Ellie Butler, who had donated bone marrow to her sister. The 2 girls and their family came on to the stage and received a standing ovation. The evening was well attended.
Training continues with Richard running a Getting Started in Chester and holding a validation evening for EP&N leaders. Clare Jones and Peter Horan have gained their wood badges and Fiona Speakes has gained her Commissioner’s wood badge. February was U shaped month. Our Youth Commissioner has taken U shaped in a box to numerous groups.

St George’s day will be celebrated on April 23rd at Capenhurst Sports field and JOTT is planned for May 13th finishing at the barbeque area at Thurstaston country park. The District AGM is May 10th at the Burleydam I would like to thank everyone for their support over the years and know you will offer the same to Fiona. Yours in scouting Sue.
