10 June 2016

2016 started with our annual Honours evening which was held at the Civic Hall in Ellesmere Port on Feb 5th. Guests included the mayor, our MP and Graham Phillips.57 Bronze Awards,28 silver awards 21 gold awards 3 Platinum and 1 diamond were presented and Adam Lloyd achieved his Queens Scout Award. 3 Commissioners Commendation Awards, 10 Chief Scout’s Commendation for good service, 3 Awards for merit and 1 bar to the Award for Merit were also awarded.

Cubs celebrate 100 years of cub scouting this year. The cubs at Dee went to the Regional birthday celebration in Blackpool on Feb 6th. It rained but they still enjoyed it. The 8th, Dee and the 6th attended the county cub camp in May and had a really “wild” time! The cubs are planning to re-new their promise at the zoo on Dec 16th. Beavers celebrate 30 years of Beaver scouting this year and a birthday party is planned.
The fiftieth Cheshire Hike took part on April 2nd and 3rd. 265 teams altogether took part and EP&N were represented by teams from Great Sutton, Willaston and Dee. Dee won the district Junior and intermediate and Great Sutton the Senior Plus.
On April 23rd we held a district day at Forest camp. This was a very successful day with about 400 young people and adults taking part. Every group was represented. The activities ranged from catapults and kayaking to climbing and fire lighting. We held our St George’s day service in the camp fire circle at the end of a very busy day. The only question asked was “When can we do this again?”
The census results showed the district is up by 36 young people and 22 adults. As a district we have the biggest percentage increase in the county. Our data base system, Compass, is now up and running and this makes record keeping much easier.
Our District AGM was held on May 11th and thanks to Val Thomson who attended. JOTT, Jamboree on the trail, took place at Thurstaston on May 14th. Lots of sausages were eaten!
Leaders and young leaders have been busy completing their training and several have achieved wood badges.
Sadly this year we lost Glenys Bourne who was a vice president of the district and Liz Parker nee Johnson whose children went to 1st Sutton and who had been a Venture scout leader.
Future events include 26th June Scout County Sunday in Chester and canoe camp.
Sue Goddard (District Commissioner for EP&N)
