Dc’s Update October 2015
I last wrote this in June and we were thinking about the summer and now our thoughts turn to Christmas! The summer is traditionally the time for camping and although camps now take part throughout the year scouts from Dee, Ist Sutton, Great Sutton, 6th and 8th went to camp in July and August and a group of cubs and scouts from 1st Sutton went to Edinburgh. On July 12th I attended the send off for the Jamboree contingent and in August Alicia, Mark and Sam set off for Japan. They had a brilliant time and particularly enjoyed the home hospitality. They will be putting on a presentation at our Honours evening on February 5th at the civic hall at 7.00 and If you would like to know more please come along. A big well done to them for all the fundraising they did in order to go.
On July 30th EPNAVCO (Ellesmere Port and Neston Association of Voluntary and Community Organisations) had a presentation ceremony. Leaders from the 8th and Great Sutton received certificates for 100 hrs service and Kan Salter received the Enid Hestor Award.
Training continued over the summer and our Local training manager has held validation meetings with individual leaders and these seem to have been successful. At least 2 leaders have achieved wood badges. Richard also held a Getting Started at Willaston on August 29th and on October 24th. There is a training weekend 14th Nov at the Heath and several leaders have booked onto this.A training weekend for young leaders was held at the Gladstone Centre in Hawarden in October. In September the young leaders put on a science day for over 70 Cubs and Beavers. This helped them to complete some of their training missions and the beavers and cubs received their Astronomy and Science badges. The high spot of the Day was the planetarium which Chris borrowed from Liverpool University and the coke bottle explosions!
Network is in process of being launched as district provision with a new programme. This was previously county based. This is for 18 to 24 year olds.
The county is running a virtual balloon race and some of our groups are taking part. Last year’s was won by a Beaver from 1st Sutton! Les Howard has race tickets. The race begins on 4th Dec and ends on the 11th Dec and is a good fundraiser.
Compass, our new data base system, will not be up and running until January and this continues to pose us problems. The DBS information needed to be filled in online and this was difficult for some leaders. However the paper form has now been re-introduced!
I hope you will be able to join us for our annual carol service in December and for the Honours evening in February. There will be coffee and mince pies after the carol service! The Honours evening is where we celebrate the achievements of our district over the past year.
